The BGO assembly shown here is an example of a special Compton Suppression type unit. As in other suppression designs the HPGE detector is surrounded by the BGO scintillator, creating a Clover type annular detector. Notice that the tapered geometry is designed so that a system of multiple HPGE and BGO detectors can create a 4π configuration around a central point of interest with minimal loss or gaps between the detectors.
